Map What a Contact Form Collects

Follow information from the field to its actual destination.

The practical starting point

A contact form can send information to email, a stored record or an external service. List each field and where its value goes. A map of the visible form is incomplete if it omits the destination and the people who can read the resulting message.

A workable next step

Use synthetic information to inspect the route in an appropriate test environment. Record copies, access and the reason each item is needed. Keep public explanations consistent with actual behaviour. FTC material offers general information-handling guidance; it is not a determination of the legal obligations that apply to your organisation or jurisdiction.

Keep in your notes

  • List fields and destinations.
  • Use synthetic test information.
  • Match explanation to behaviour.
